To the right a view from the internet cafe of Catarman during strong rain. The cabels are highly improvised and always in a state of repair, and it may happen that footwalkers get hit from cables flying around. Below a typical street scene just around the corner. The overland bus is full up to the roof.

Street Scenes from Catarman. Very often, the old shop houses remind of Spanish of Chinese ancestry.

And then we are in the centre of Catarman, with the Cathedral and its beautiful square and with the big market, where everything avaible in Northern Samar province can be found.

And then Catarman still is provincial capital of Northern Samar province and thus needs a provincial capitol, where my father in law was active for years as provincial board member. From the front, the provincial capitol looks rather respectably, but if you walk around it, you will notice, that the building was never finished. It seems that the contractor had expected construction to commence soon and left his caterpillar on location. Not it can't be used anymore...

Visiting this bank in Catarman, you should deposit your firearms at the entrance. Let's hope that bank robbers will always obey...
And then the airport of Catarman, which is frequented irregularly from Manila. The runway crosses the old highway from Catarman westwards, which for a long time meant that all wheels had to stop when the plane came. However, now a bypass has been constructed, and when no plane is there, the runway can be used by the public anyway.

With approximately 60 000 inhabitants, the Provincial Capital of Catarman, 30kms eastwards from Lavezares at the mouth of the Catarman River, is a typically Philippine small town and forms the administrative and economic center of Northern Samar province. The bridge over Catarman River shows a first appalling impression of the city, but even here it is important to know that building near the water means to be poor.
